A day of joy for the little angels - Sparkle 2018

Community Service Jan 13, 2019

As told by Rtr. Dilini Ayesha

Children can be described as the angels on Earth. Their hearts know only about joy and peace. How cruel would it be, if someone or something ruined their little world? The sad truth is that there are many dark shadows that affect children. Cancer is one such monster. Annually, many children suffer from cancer and leave the world. CCC House situated inside the premises of the Apeksha Hospital, Maharagama is a transit home for cancer patients and their caretakers. This Christmas, 42 children were there, in the middle of a fight with cancer.

We, Rotaract Mora, organized a Christmas party named “Sparkle”, as a subproject of Hand in Hand 2018/19, for these little angles in CCC House. Our main aim was to gift a sparkly Christmas to the children. Nearly 50 Rotaractors, including the foreign participants of our International Service project, Ceylon Safari 2018, gathered around the CCC House for the party.

Steve Maraboli, the famous American researcher, has stated that “A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.” I’m sure our kind gestures had enough power on the children to make them forget all their pains.

The event started at 9:00 AM with a wonderful magic show. Various mysterious magic acts stole their attention. Loud claps at the end of each act had enough evidence of a successful show. At the end of the magic show, Santa Clause entered the hall along with our lovely Mickey Mouse and Jerry. They were none other than three of our delightful Rotaractors in costumes.  With their arrival, the children were gifted with Christmas hats and wonderful masks. While Santa was busy giving away gifts, the children were busy playing with their lovely Mickey Mouse and Jerry. I could only hear their hearty chuckles. Then they were engaged in paper art to make beautiful Christmas cards while mingling with us. After that, our talented musicians turned up. They healed the children’s minds with their great music. One child sang a song. I still remember every word of that song. Finally, with the gifts from Santa’s big bag, Sparkle 2018 reached its successful endpoint.

“My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others.” ― Bob Hope

I’m sure that our Rotaractors had a great Christmas with the little angels at CCC House. And also, they owned one of the best Christmases of their lifetime!
