Grama Prabodhaya Rises and Shines In The World

Community Service Jun 23, 2017

Grama Prabodhaya – “In Pursuit of Their Dreams” is an effort and a dream of Rotaract Mora to uplift the quality of lives of the small rural village of Ranugalla, Monaragala. Today the endeavors of our Rotaractors has reached across borders to bring international recondition and esteem to our Island. Surpassing all projects carried out by over 8000 worldwide Rotaract clubs in 167 countries, ‘Grama Prabodhaya’ was adjudged as the ‘Single Club International Winner in year 2016-17 Rotaract Outstanding Project Award’ by Rotary International’. This prestigious award was won for the first time by a Sri Lankan Rotaract club.

“Grama Prabodhaya” was initiated since June 2016 as yet another effort to turn the innocent dreams of a small untrodden village – Ranugalla in Monaragala District, in to reality. This was not just a community service project with the concept of material donation but a collective effort to develop a village comprehensively in many aspects and to uplift the quality of life of villagers. Today “Grama Prabodhaya” has become an internationally recognized project which brought much honour to our little island.

Travelling back and forth from University of Moratuwa to Ranugalla was no easy task. But the dream and hope in the hearts of our Rotaractors to make the lives of the children and villagers of Ranugalla better led them go on this journey with much enthusiasm. The first phase of the project concluded successfully with numerous sub projects to uplift the quality of the villagers in many ways such as health and nutrition, education, etc.

A project of this calibre and magnitude is not a feat Rotaract Mora could undertake on its own. Millennium Information Technologies a subsidiary of London Stock Exchange Group, has readily stepped forward to give their financial assistance for “Grama Prabodhaya”.

This was only the start of a long journey ahead. The next phases of “Grama Prabodhaya” will focus on providing clean drinking water to the entire village and also on introducing new employment opportunities to the unemployed citizens, especially the women in the village.

As Rotaractors upholding the motto, ‘Service Above Self’, we humbly acknowledge this award as an appreciation of the commitment of Rotaract Mora especially the Grama Prabodhaya team. We believe that this would provide motivation for our club members to successfully implement the upcoming phases of “Grama Prabodhaya”, the quest of assisting this rural community ‘in the pursuit of their dreams’.
