Leaders Are Not Born, They Are Made – “Lead with Spark”

Community Service Apr 17, 2017

Prosperity, success, wealth and well being of a country’s future depend on tomorrow’s leaders. As Nelson Mandela once said “Our children are the rock on which our future will be built, our greatest asset as a nation. They will be the leaders of our country, the creators of our national wealth who care for and protect our people”. Leaders are not born overnight. Children of today need to be educated and guided throughout the years. Rotaract mora who recognized this social need, always takes measures to groom the future generation.

Marking another milestone of Grama Prabodaya, Rotaract club of University of Moratuwa in collaboration with the Prefects’ Guild of Ananda College, Colombo organized a Leadership Program “Lead with Spark”, as a sub-project of the Community Service initiative Grama Prabodhaya for the students of Ranugalla Kanishta Vidyalaya which was successfully held on 8th of April 2017.

Positive thinking and teamwork are essential qualities of a capable leader. Planting these seeds in the minds of students the event was conducted as two lecture sessions; outbound activity session and an interactive session.

Highlighting the fact that “teamwork builds the dream work”, the 1st half of the session was based on team building. The first lecture was compromised of the importance, guidelines, and capabilities of creating a strong team work. No teaching is completed without the practical approach. Thereby children who were gathered were divided into three groups and each group had to participate in outdoor team activities separately. An enthusiastic participation could be seen among the students in the outbound activities which required very energetic team work. After enjoying the afternoon tea, students were asked about the qualities and ideas that they had gained from the activities and they eagerly answered. Concluding the first session, the disciplinary code of Ananda College was explained by the Prefects’ guild, emphasizing the importance of discipline for their lives. Furthermore, they were handed over a booklet containing the disciplinary code.

It is known that “positive thinking will let do everything better than negative thinking”. With that vision, the second half of the session was held as a lecture on “Positive thinking”. Explaining the importance and techniques of developing a positive attitude to individual lives the session was concluded successfully. Apart from that, the Prefects’ guild presented a yearbook compiled by them to be kept at the library.

“Lead with Spark” – the leadership camp of Grama Prabodaya was thus completed effectively. The efforts and involvement of the Ananda College prefects’ guild were praiseworthy where they also displayed their leadership skills well. Moreover, students of Ranugalla Kanishta Vidyalaya were also able to acquire much fruitful information regarding teamwork and positive thinking and had an impulse in mounting these talents. It was an unforgettable memory for both the organizers and participants.
