The First Impression On An Employer - The Résumé - Are You Ready? 2016

Every undergraduate’s dream is to be a professional. To reach the top of the ladder of professionalism, the initial step of climbing is to win the first impression of the employer. For this purpose, presenting proper curriculum vitae is a must. Realizing this need of the undergraduates’, Rotaract club of University of Moratuwa in collaboration with the Career Guidance Unit of the university organized Are You Ready? – The Resume 2016 and it was held on 21st of November 2016 at the Civil Auditorium of the university premises with a record breaking audience.

The session “The Resume” was organized in order to give the proficiency of making a well-written CV which is one of the leading factors to make a strong first impression on the employer when you step into the corporate world.

Two distinguished speakers Mr. Deshan Wijesinghe, HR Business partner of MIT and Mr. Prasanna Karunarathna, Director of Business Operations- Surveillance of MIT and the President 1997/98 of Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa addressed the gathering enlightening them with their knowledge and experience.

Frist half of the session was conducted by Mr. Prasanna Karunarathna who explained different available career paths for an engineering undergraduate. He emphasized the importance of selecting an occupation which you are passionate about, skillful in and with a suitable salary, which in other words is one’s dream job. He also motivated students to step out of the comfort zone to reach the ultimate goals of life.

Being an expert in HR section, Mr. Deshan Wijesinghe then explained the important areas to be considered in making a resume. He discussed the main points a Curriculum Vitae should include, the number of pages to be attached, areas that catch the eye of the employer and the common mistakes done when making a CV.

Thus we believe the undergraduates, especially the passing out batch of University of Moratuwa was able to gain some worthwhile experience which they could use in building up their career path.
